Sometimes an old painting comes back to you and you see it in a whole new light. As an artist I am trying to stop separating my paintings into "the old stuff" and "the new stuff." Here I have an "old" painting, "Venus Returns" that I finished in 2014. I started it years earlier and it evolved into this figure of light and beauty. She is adorned with imagery of the earth: landscape, earth textures, water, fruit and vegetables (yes, potatoes!). I just realized how connected she is to what I am doing presently. I have had my eyes up at the stars all summer long. I have been watching Venus in the mornings in all of her glory. When I named "Venus Returns" I thought I was randomly selecting a name for this figure that is synonymous with beauty and the feminine. I see now how this older painting was another stepping stone toward my current work and how interconnected she is to what I am painting in my studio today.
